Answers to Your Questions
What exactly is an Animal Chaplain?
As an chaplain, I provide non-judgmental emotional support to anyone navigating any anticipatory or the loss of a companion animal, forced surrender, and comfort to those serving in the animal care space. I am here to be a steady and confidential guiding source to hold, honor your feelings without minimizing any pieces of it.
Do I have to be religious to work with you?
No, not at all. My practice is entirely non-religious and open to all regardless of identities, spiritual, or no faith background. My focus is purely on human compassion and honoring the unique bond you shared with your animal.
How do I know if this is right for me?
If you find your feelings unexplainable to even those closest to you, those around you who don't understand your pain, or if you are an animal care professional carrying compounding workplace trauma, I am here for you. If you need a calm presence to listen without clinical judgment, I am a good fit. I also seek to support individuals who live at the intersection of multiple identities especially BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ community.
What happens during a typical support session?
Prior to our first meeting, I will ask you to provide some information via a brief intake form or you may provide a narrative that will help me understand what you are currently experiencing. So you may determine if this is the right place for you, I provide our initial consultation as a free 25 minute. We will be meeting remotely so you can stay in your own comfortable space. Following our initial consultation, future 45-minute sessions are unhurried, quiet, and focused entirely on you, whether I am talking through loss, navigating complex guilt, or planning a personalized memorial.
The fee for those 45-minute sessions concludes with one or are on-going sessions, our individual fee scale will be determined. Regardless, I am deeply committed to providing low cost accessible services.
Do you provide medical or clinical mental health diagnoses?
No. As a caregiver, I am entirely focused on providing emotional companionship as you navigate your loss or other emotional feelings. I am not a therapist or psychologist, psychiatrist, or licensed clinical counselor. If you need acute mental health care, I will gladly point you to professional resources on my Resources page.
I had to surrender my animal rather than experience a death. Can you still help me?
Absolutely. A volunteer or forced surrender of a companion animals carries a profound, deeply hidden trauma that I witnessed frequently in my world of life and volunteerism. The grief associated with either a forced surrender or another path to losing the physical connection to an animal is entirely valid, and you are certainly welcome here.
